Balanced Socio-Economic Development – Alternative Livelihoods –

The Balanced Socio-Economic Development program aims to improve the economic stability and overall well-being of forest communities through diversified and sustainable income-generating activities. This program focuses on enhancing agricultural practices, promoting sustainable non-timber forest products, establishing community financial schemes, and rehabilitating and constructing irrigation systems.

Agriculture-Based Livelihoods


Objective: Improve agricultural practices and increase food security for forest communities through sustainable farming techniques.

  • Activities:
  • Farmer Field Schools (FFS): Organizing training sessions for farmers on organic farming techniques, including animal raising, family fish ponds, and home gardening.
  • Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Promoting practices that help farmers adapt to climate change and minimize associated risks.
  • Market Information Dissemination: Providing farmers with up-to-date information on market prices and production technologies to enhance their economic decisions.
  • Livestock Management: Offering training on sustainable livestock practices to increase productivity and income.

Impact: Enhanced food security and increased income for farming families. Improved resilience of agricultural practices to climate change. Better market access and economic decision-making for farmers.

Sustainable Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs)


Objective: Promote the sustainable harvesting, value addition, and marketing of non-timber forest products to improve livelihoods.

  • Activities:
  • Capacity Building: Training community members, especially women and youth, on sustainable NTFP harvesting techniques.
  • Value Addition: Implementing processes that add value to NTFPs, such as processing and packaging, to increase their market value.
  • Market Linkages: Establishing connections between NTFP producers and markets to ensure fair prices and stable demand.
  • Micro-Enterprise Development: Supporting the development of community-based micro-enterprises around NTFP products.

Impact: Increased income for community members through sustainable NTFP practices. Empowered women and youth actively participating in local economies. Improved market access and stability for NTFP products.

Community Financial Schemes


Objective: Provide financial support and resources to community members through self-help groups and micro-lending activities.

  • Activities:
  • Self-Help Groups (SHGs): Organizing and training SHGs to save money regularly and use the funds to start and sustain small-scale enterprises.
  • Micro-Lending: Facilitating micro-loans to women and marginalized groups to invest in domestic businesses and improve their standard of living.
  • Financial Literacy: Providing training on financial management and investment strategies to ensure the effective use of loans and savings.

Impact: Increased financial stability and economic opportunities for community members. Enhanced capacity of women and marginalized groups to invest in and manage small businesses. Improved overall standard of living and poverty reduction in forest communities.

Irrigation: Rehabilitation and Construction


Objective: Improve water management and irrigation systems to support sustainable agriculture and community livelihoods.

  • Activities:
  • Irrigation System Rehabilitation: Repairing and upgrading existing irrigation systems to enhance their efficiency and reliability.
  • New Irrigation Projects: Constructing new irrigation infrastructure to support agricultural activities and ensure water availability.
  • Water Resource Management: Training community members on effective water management practices to optimize the use of irrigation systems.
  • Climate Change Adaptation: Implementing projects that link climate change adaptation to conservation, such as pond rehabilitation for water reservoirs.

Impact: Improved agricultural productivity and food security through reliable irrigation. Enhanced community resilience to climate variability and water scarcity. Strengthened capacity for sustainable water management and conservation practices.

Forests and Livelihood Organization

FLO is a non-profit local organization, established by a team of local people in Kratie Province, Northeastern Cambodia. The staff is mostly selected from target communities, indigenous people and former CBO members.
