Collaborative natural resources management between the state and local communities offers a promising approach but its full potential remains untapped. Unsustainable and illegal extraction (illegal logging, forestland grabbing and wildlife poaching) is inevitable unless communities enjoy secure resource rights and realize tangible benefits.
As part of its efforts to encourage communities and industries to pursue sustainable and legal modes of natural resource extraction and empower communities have formal rights to manage natural resources sustainably and to derive tangible livelihood benefits from doing so, FLO has been working with different youth groups in the communities to campaign against illegal extraction of natural resources in forms of:
- youth gathering disseminating the impact of using chainsaw and unsustainable collection of NTFPs;
- promoting community rights on the use of natural resource sustainably;
- documenting pressure on community forestry and Collective Land Titling
