Becoming Community Forestry Leader: Mr. Sum Saray’s Journey
In Veal Kanseng village, Mr. Sum Saray, a 46-year-old father of three, has become a dedicated advocate for conservation and sustainability.
Initially relying on the forest for his woodworking business, Sum Saray was hesitant to join the Community Forestry Committee. However, deforestation made wood scarce and expensive, causing his income to decrease. For several years, his wife had to work in a garment factory in Phnom Penh to support the family.
Encouraged by the former CF president, Sum Saray attended training sessions by WWF and FLO on conservation and sustainable business practices. He became the deputy chairman of the CF in 2017 and was elected chairman in 2021. That same year, his wife returned home, and they opened a small restaurant, improving their quality of life and income. Now, their son attends school regularly, and the family enjoys more time together.
